$266 Billion Stimulus Package is big number for a country like India. The question is how will these funds be dispersed? For climate change deniers & governments globally, it should now be evidently clear that the climate change is an act of man. So while India waits for the details on how this money will be spent our government should stop considering & start working towards self reliance through sustainable action.

What would this look like? This is my personal opinion on what should be done:

  1. Tax payers money should only be given to companies that are investing in climate action through mitigating their environment impact across their operations. Strict reporting standards should be put in place
  2. No Stimulus to fossil fuel companies.
  3. Stimulus money should be focused on development of renewables & waste management. States such as Andra, Karnataka, TN, should be directed to clear all dues of renewable energy companies, or the central government must deduct this amount from GST owed to states & clear these dues
  4. Consistent polices in regards to tariffs along with policy mandates directing discoms to increase purchase from renewable socurces
  5. Swachhbharat Abhiyan: Shift focus from toilet building to increased focus on privatisation, funding, infrastructure development & recycling in the waste management sector
  6. Auto Sector: Before handing out money, have companies commit to increased fuel efficiencies along with a clear road map of not only ramping development & manufacturing of electric vehicles, but also increasing their usage of renewable energy at their manufacturing facilities & investing in charging infrastructure.
  7. Delegate funding towards developing mechanisms to store excess energy from renewable sources, which can be used when the sun does not shine or wind does not blow.
  8. Clean Water for all: Water not data is the next oil & circularity in this sphere is a dire need for the billion plus people living in India.
  9. 30% of this stimulus package ($80 Billion) should be used in supporting the green revolution, which would include, water, waste, renewables, agriculture & green transportation

The tremendous potential to create wealth, employment & associated health & environmental benefits cannot be ignored any more. Being sustainably self reliant & moving towards a green economy should be the sole focus on the government.
